About the Tip Calculator

Tipping etiquette varies widely by country and service type. In the United States and Canada, restaurant servers, delivery drivers, and service staff rely heavily on gratuity. This Tip Calculator allows you to instantly determine appropriate tip amounts and divide the total bill evenly across any party size.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter your pre-tip or total receipt Bill Amount.
  2. 2Select or enter your desired Tip Percentage (typically 15% for adequate service, 18%–20% for good service, and 22%+ for exceptional dining).
  3. 3Enter the number of people sharing the check.
  4. 4Review the exact tip per person and total payment owed per person.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Tip is calculated by multiplying the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. Total per person is the bill plus tip divided by the number of guests.

Worked Example: Splitting an $85 Dinner with 18% Tip Among 2 People

Scenario: Two colleagues share a lunch totaling $85.00 and agree to leave an 18% tip, splitting the final cost evenly.

Calculate total tip: $85.00 × 0.18
$15.30 total tip
Calculate grand total bill: $85.00 + $15.30
$100.30 grand total
Divide per person: $100.30 ÷ 2
$50.15 per person ($7.65 tip each)
Conclusion: Each diner pays $50.15 ($42.50 food share + $7.65 gratuity share).

Assumptions & Practical Limitations

  • Assumes the bill is divided equally among all guests. If party members ordered substantially different items, individual itemized splitting is recommended.
  • Check your receipt to verify whether gratuity was already automatically included (often designated as "Auto-Gratuity" or "Service Charge" for parties of 6 or more).

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard etiquette suggests tipping on the pre-tax food and beverage subtotal, because sales tax is a government levy rather than service received. However, tipping on the post-tax total is also common and represents a slightly higher tip for the server.
