About the Discount Calculator

Finding the genuine final cost of a discounted item in a store or online can be deceptively tricky, especially when stores offer stacked promotional codes (e.g. "Take 20% off, plus an extra 10% coupon at checkout") and local sales tax applies. This Discount Calculator eliminates the guesswork by computing sequential discounts, total dollars saved, and exact out-of-pocket prices.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter the Original List Price (MSRP or retail price).
  2. 2Enter the primary promotional Discount Percentage (e.g. 20%).
  3. 3Optionally enter an additional stacked coupon percentage (e.g. 10% extra). Note: sequential discounts apply to the already-discounted price, not the original retail price.
  4. 4Enter your local Sales Tax rate to calculate the exact total due at checkout.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

Sequential discounts are applied successively: Subtotal = Original Price × (1 - Discount₁ / 100) × (1 - Discount₂ / 100). Sales tax is then added to the discounted subtotal: Final Price = Subtotal × (1 + Tax / 100).

Worked Example: $100 Item with 20% Store Sale, 10% VIP Coupon, and 8% Tax

Scenario: A shopper selects a jacket priced at $100.00. The store offers 20% off storewide, they have a 10% member coupon, and the local sales tax is 8.0%.

Apply primary 20% store discount: $100.00 × 0.20 = $20.00 discount
$80.00 intermediate price
Apply secondary 10% coupon to discounted price: $80.00 × 0.10 = $8.00 coupon discount
$72.00 pre-tax subtotal ($28.00 total savings)
Calculate 8% sales tax: $72.00 × 0.08
$5.76 sales tax
Calculate final checkout total: $72.00 + $5.76
$77.76 final price
Conclusion: The shopper saves $28.00 off retail (a 28% effective discount, not 30%), paying $77.76 total after sales tax.

Assumptions & Practical Limitations

  • Stores almost universally apply stacked coupons sequentially (multiplicatively) rather than additively. 20% off plus an extra 10% off equals 28% total discount, not 30%.
  • Some luxury jurisdictions or clearance items may have exclusions or non-discountable items; check store policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the second discount is applied to the lower, already-discounted price ($80), rather than the original $100. 10% of $80 is $8, making total savings $28 (28%), not $30 (30%).
