About the Discount Calculator
Finding the genuine final cost of a discounted item in a store or online can be deceptively tricky, especially when stores offer stacked promotional codes (e.g. "Take 20% off, plus an extra 10% coupon at checkout") and local sales tax applies. This Discount Calculator eliminates the guesswork by computing sequential discounts, total dollars saved, and exact out-of-pocket prices.
How to Use This Calculator
- 1Enter the Original List Price (MSRP or retail price).
- 2Enter the primary promotional Discount Percentage (e.g. 20%).
- 3Optionally enter an additional stacked coupon percentage (e.g. 10% extra). Note: sequential discounts apply to the already-discounted price, not the original retail price.
- 4Enter your local Sales Tax rate to calculate the exact total due at checkout.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
Worked Example: $100 Item with 20% Store Sale, 10% VIP Coupon, and 8% Tax
Scenario: A shopper selects a jacket priced at $100.00. The store offers 20% off storewide, they have a 10% member coupon, and the local sales tax is 8.0%.
Assumptions & Practical Limitations
- Stores almost universally apply stacked coupons sequentially (multiplicatively) rather than additively. 20% off plus an extra 10% off equals 28% total discount, not 30%.
- Some luxury jurisdictions or clearance items may have exclusions or non-discountable items; check store policy.
