About the GPA Calculator
A Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standard metric used by colleges, universities, and high schools to measure academic performance. Because a 4-credit science lab with a low grade impacts your record more heavily than a 1-credit seminar, GPA is calculated as a credit-weighted average rather than a simple arithmetic mean. This tool supports dynamic course lists and customizable institutional grading scales.
How to Use This Calculator
- 1Select your school’s Grading Scale (Standard 4.0 with plus/minus, Non-minus 4.0, or 5.0 weighted).
- 2Add your courses: enter the Course Name (optional), Credit Hours (typically 3 or 4 per class), and Letter Grade achieved.
- 3Click "Add Course" if you need additional rows, or the remove icon to delete a course.
- 4Optionally fill in "Prior Cumulative GPA" and "Prior Completed Credits" to see your new updated overall academic standing.
- 5View your Semester GPA, Total Credit Hours, and Quality Points.
Formula & Calculation Methodology
Worked Example: Four-Course College Semester
Scenario: A student completes Calculus (4 credits, grade A-), Chemistry (3 credits, grade B+), History (3 credits, grade A), and English Composition (3 credits, grade B).
Assumptions & Practical Limitations
- Pass/Fail and Audit courses typically award credit without contributing to GPA quality points and should be excluded from GPA calculations.
- Different institutions award slightly varying points for plus/minus grades (e.g. some universities cap an A+ at 4.0 while others award 4.33).
