About the GPA Calculator

A Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standard metric used by colleges, universities, and high schools to measure academic performance. Because a 4-credit science lab with a low grade impacts your record more heavily than a 1-credit seminar, GPA is calculated as a credit-weighted average rather than a simple arithmetic mean. This tool supports dynamic course lists and customizable institutional grading scales.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Select your school’s Grading Scale (Standard 4.0 with plus/minus, Non-minus 4.0, or 5.0 weighted).
  2. 2Add your courses: enter the Course Name (optional), Credit Hours (typically 3 or 4 per class), and Letter Grade achieved.
  3. 3Click "Add Course" if you need additional rows, or the remove icon to delete a course.
  4. 4Optionally fill in "Prior Cumulative GPA" and "Prior Completed Credits" to see your new updated overall academic standing.
  5. 5View your Semester GPA, Total Credit Hours, and Quality Points.

Formula & Calculation Methodology

GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points earned by total credit hours attempted: GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours Where Quality Points for each class = Credit Hours × Grade Point Value. For cumulative GPA planning: Cumulative GPA = (Prior Quality Points + Semester Quality Points) ÷ (Prior Credits + Semester Credits)

Worked Example: Four-Course College Semester

Scenario: A student completes Calculus (4 credits, grade A-), Chemistry (3 credits, grade B+), History (3 credits, grade A), and English Composition (3 credits, grade B).

Step 1: Compute Calculus Quality Points: 4 credits × 3.7 (A-) = 14.8 points
14.8 points
Step 2: Compute Chemistry Quality Points: 3 credits × 3.3 (B+) = 9.9 points
9.9 points
Step 3: Compute History Quality Points: 3 credits × 4.0 (A) = 12.0 points
12.0 points
Step 4: Compute English Quality Points: 3 credits × 3.0 (B) = 9.0 points
9.0 points
Step 5: Sum Points & Credits: Total Points = 14.8 + 9.9 + 12.0 + 9.0 = 45.7 points; Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 13 credits
45.7 points / 13 credits
Step 6: Divide Points by Credits: 45.7 ÷ 13
3.515 GPA
Conclusion: The weighted semester GPA is 3.52 on a 4.0 scale across 13 credit hours.

Assumptions & Practical Limitations

  • Pass/Fail and Audit courses typically award credit without contributing to GPA quality points and should be excluded from GPA calculations.
  • Different institutions award slightly varying points for plus/minus grades (e.g. some universities cap an A+ at 4.0 while others award 4.33).

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, a 3.0 GPA (a B average) meets standard requirements for academic good standing and many graduate programs. A 3.5 or above qualifies for Dean’s List honors and competitive graduate admissions, while a 3.8+ often confers Latin honors (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude).
